ECU: Electronic Control Unit - is the main brain of the EFI system . The ECU will read inputs from all the sensors on the Vehicle, process information, and calculate how to activate its various outputs.
The ECU may be simple enough to have just a couple of sensors and a single output, or it may have 20 or more inputs and outputs and control everything that can be adjusted.

More advanced ECMs found on most modern cars also control the ignition timing, Variable Valve Timing (VVT), the level of boost maintained by the turbocharger (in turbocharged cars), and control other peripherals.
