Internal Combustion Engine: An engine that produces power from the combustion and expansion of a fuel-and-air mixture within a closed cylinder. Internal-combustion engines are based on two methods of operation: two cycle and four cycle. In each method, a mixture of fuel and air enters the engine through the induction system.
A piston compresses the mixture within a closed cylinder. A precisely timed spark ignites the charge after it is compressed. The explosive burning produces very high temperatures and pressures that push the piston down and rotate the crankshaft, generating a motive force.
