Muffler: Part of the Exhaust System, the idea behind the muffler remove unwanted noise pollution (which is measured in dB (decibels) a scale which is used to measure sound) that the an engine will produce to an acceptable level, depending on the regulations of your state or country that you live in and or for the suitable application.
There are many shapes and sizes, brands, and different materials that mufflers come in, each having different attributes and used in different applications. Ie. whether or not a car has a Turbo, size of the engine and the 'sound' desired from the engine can affect the type of muffler you may choose.

In a lot of cases car enthusiasts will replace the muffler with a high flow muffler so that more performance is gained from the engine. Performance is gained by installing a high flow muffler. High flow mufflers allow burnt gasses to travel through the exhaust system faster than a mass produced systems. By reducing the force required to push burnt gases out of the engine, the engine will produce more power.

The price of a muffler will vary pending on the vehicle you may have, brand of muffler you may choose, and or store the purchase / installation was made.
